Sgt. Jim Southworth has served a distinguished 40 years as a law enforcement officer: Twenty three years in various assignments at the Kalkaska County Sheriff's Office; six years as a Detective/Sergeant with the Osceola County Sheriff's Office; eight years as a patrolman with the Sebewing Police Department and three years as a patrolman with the Tuscola County Sheriff's Office.

First ORV Safety Certificate Class, April 4, 2009

Deputy Bogumil conducted the first of several ORV Safety Classes on Saturday, April 4th, 2009. The class consisted of 12 kids and their parents. The ORV Safety Course is required for kids 16 years and younger, so that they may operate an ORV under the watchful eye of their Parent or Guardian in public. Twelve participants received their ORV Safety Certificates. Refer to the "News Release" Page for a schedule of upcoming classes. ORV Season is upon us!

Wertz Warriors Snowmobile Club gathered at Dingman's Bar on their annual fund raiser ride benefiting Special Olympics. This ride was also in memory of Pat Modos who was tragically killed in a snowmobile accident. "Pops" Modos (Pat's Father) has hosted the annual ride for the last 15 years and raised a total of $280,000.00. This year Special Olympics will receive a check for $8,000 dollars. Deputies from the Kalkaska County Sheriff's Office served as escorts and assisted with traffic control for event riders at major road crossings within the county.

For a downstate school project meant to facilitate letter writing and incorporate geography, Flat Stanley visits Kalkaska's Sheriff, Undersheriff and Probate Court Judge Lynne M. Buday. His adventures are photographed and documented where they will be shared with the students of Round Elementary School in Hartland, Michigan.

Deputy Denny Corrado conducted a course on "Self-Defense Awareness for Women" to the Academea Club of Kalkaska on January 19, 2009. The program was designed to demonstrate the importance of being alert and aware of your surroundings to reduce the chance of becoming a victim.
